2021

October

Summary

October was another big month for the team at RegTech Associates. We moved into a brand new office situated at Exmouth Market in London, and we released the first big update to Radar. Since going live with our digital platform in July, we’ve been busy behind the scenes making it better and better and we are thrilled to share this with you.

We’ve also been hard at work with our research and looking at the entire RegTech market. The two insight pieces we produced in October look at what is RegTech and how it began, and then we dive into the current market and how it is maturing from start-up to scale-up. We also caught up with Gungho Marketing who help RegTechs of any growth stage take their business to the next level. You should check out their services if you are looking to scale your revenue.

As always, we love seeing all the RegTech news with a lot of funding rounds, partnerships, acquisitions and new products launched again this month. As evidenced in our latest blog post, we’ve done our research and can show you exactly how this market is growing.

On a final note, the FCA has re-launched their Showcase Days and are inviting RegTechs and technology firms to showcase their solutions to inform their understanding of the market and potential SupTech initiatives. You can read more information and apply here.

You might have seen us in the news last month. We’re putting the finishing touches on a piece of research on behalf of PassFort. This research included a survey of banking customers asking about their recent compliance onboarding experiences and it revealed some very interesting trends. You can read more about those here.

In September, we produced a few new industry insights for you to read, all published on Radar. We take a look at incoming regulations for artificial intelligence and dive into the world of crypto-assets, looking at DeFi and non-fungible tokens. Login to Radar to access these blogs.

There’s no slowing down the RegTech industry with more news on funding rounds, acquisitions, partnerships, and new product launches. Congratulations to all the companies involved.

Finally, we are delighted to see the return of face-to-face events and we’ve got some exciting news to share on this topic. If you would like to get involved with these events, contact us at [email protected] to learn about commercial partnership opportunities.

Summary

As many countries bounce out of the pandemic, we’ve never been busier. As well as working with a new Dutch client in the data privacy space, we have recently signed a German financial crime client, a UK client in the conduct market and one of the biggest Global names in Audit, Tax & Legal and advisory. As a result, we’ve recently posted a new research analyst role to our careers page, if you know anyone looking to work within a great team, send them our way.

We were also pleased to support a new conference, run by the US fast growing RegTech Compliance.AI in the last month, both Sian and I spoke at their Expert-in-the-loop conference and it was good to get a view on the fast-growing US market.

Last month we launched our Pulse Report, a regular round-up of what is happening in the industry. We note this month the growth in the companies within the fraud market and feature several of them within our report. Do contact me if you like to know more.

Summary

The last 12 months have been some of the toughest that I have ever encountered in my career. Speaking to clients, colleagues and friends during that time has made me realise how wide-reaching the impact of the pandemic has been.

As a business owner, I am pleased to report that during April we started to see some green shoots of recovery. Decisions delayed during the last 6 months are now being made and work carried out through the cold winter months in the northern hemisphere has started to reap its rewards.

I am immensely proud of our team for the work they have done on our latest industry research report. We are also pleased to launch our Pulse Report, a regular round-up of what is happening in the industry. Do contact me if you like to know more.

Summary

Can you believe that there is only one month left of 2020! It feels like this year has gone so quickly and what a year!

Talking to RegTech CEO’s and buyers in the last month, we see a smorgasbord of sentiment about the market. Many are worried about global growth in 2021, whilst some are taking this moment to put in place ambitious growth plans. We also continue to see large and small M&A deals completed such as some of the ones we highlight below.

We have been researching the industry for almost 4 years, therefore we were very excited to win the project for the City of London. Being given the opportunity to conduct research that will shape UK (and who knows, maybe even globally) RegTech policy makes us incredibly proud. This week is your last chance to take our survey and contribute to the future success of the UK RegTech Industry. So don’t miss your opportunity to take 20 minutes out of your day to complete it today.

Lastly, we are launching our very own research and insights platform in Q1 of 2021 and we are looking for people to participate in our pilot and feedback their thoughts. If you would like to be a part of this pilot, please let us know by sending an email to [email protected]. or by contacting me directly.

As part of the work, we will be reaching out to those working in financial institutions to take part in interviews to help our research. If you would like to be interviewed, please   – this research will directly impact the development of the RegTech market in the UK so we really appreciate your participation.

For those of us who are in the UK, I think it’s safe to say Summer is over. The temperature has dropped and the rain is ready to set in. I hope, wherever you are, you’re ready for the last sprint to the end of the year.

September was a great month, we launched our latest research report, commissioned by the New South Wales Government and the Australian Trade and Investment Commission. From that research, we are hosting a webinar tomorrow to look at the RegTech landscape in the UK and Ireland and talk about what it takes for a RegTech to make it in this market. If you’re interested to joining the webinar, you can register here.

One of the biggest news items this month was the leak of the FinCEN files, exposing some of the world’s biggest banks allowing dirty money to be moved around the world. We’ve included a useful article that outlines the ‘what now?’.

Finally, It has been amazing to see Global RegTech funding continuing apace, SumSub & ACIN (UK), FirstAML (New Zealand) and Honcho (USA) to name a few. Congratulations to the teams and founders. Keep posting your news on social to #RegTechReview.

We are now six months into 2020, one of the most unprecedented years of change in our lifetime so far. All of us here at RegTech Associates hope everyone is staying safe, healthy and finding peace in the current circumstances.

We have seen quite a few changes this month. As the team has been working so effectively virtually, we said goodbye to our physical office in Barbican. Once the current climate looks like it might be close to getting back to what is was, we will look for a new place to meet with clients and work together (physically) again.

We also welcomed two staff members, Michael Lawrence who has come onboard to help with research and delivery over the summer period and Kurosh Amini who joins our commercial team.

My Co-Founder Sian has been showcasing her expertise in the RegTech Market and also celebrated her two year anniversary with RegTech Associates. Our Client Delivery Manager, Tom, has been accredited with the UNPRI qualification and we held the second webinar in the Digital Regulation Series on the theme ‘Crises, fraud and the use of AI’.

Based upon your feedback, we are going to be reviewing and highlighting RegTech news that caught our eye over the previous month, alongside news about ourselves (of course!). We hope you enjoy the new format and content.

Summary

As the days start to get shorter, our To Do lists at RegTech Associates are getting longer – something we are very happy about! We continue to grow our team, and this month we welcome Helen O’Connor, our new Head of Events.

Helen will be coordinating our Digital Regulation Series In Collaboration with the FCA, international regulators and financial institutions series of events that will run throughout the autumn and into 2019. Our first event is approaching and a few places remain, so sign up before it is too late.

For RegTech companies in our community wishing to apply for the Accenture FinTech Innovation lab, applications close on 19th October so you still have time to submit your application.

This month, the Reg Doctor spent some time with Robert Keane from Pirum Systems to find out more about the SFTR (or Securities Finance Transaction Regulation in long hand) . In Robert’s words, SFTR is ‘a bit of a beast’ so stay tuned for the next post on this topic which will explore some of the related challenges.

We are also pleased to be involved with RegTech Rising for the 2nd year in a row.

Finally, we are delighted to welcome new clients Arctic Intelligence, Limehouse Consulting and Kompany. We are excited about working with these fantastic companies.

Summary

Whilst August is typically a quiet month in the City of London, we have been very busy at RegTech Associates with new clients and planning for some up and coming announcements. I am especially excited to announce our new event series on the theme of Digital Regulation, in collaboration with regulators and financial institutions.

We are once again delighted to work with Accenture on their London FinTech Innovation Lab. Not only am I continuing my work with the Lab as a mentor but we are also helping the Accenture team to find the best RegTech firms to apply for this great opportunity.

The Reg Doctor made her debut on the fantastic 11:FS Fintech Insiders podcast, discussing all things regulation, including the the launch of the OCC’s FinTech charter. In further regulatory innovation news, this month also saw the announcement by the FCA of the Global Financial Innovation Network – a community of financial services regulators and related organizations to collaborate across borders on all aspects of innovation.

July

Summary

July was a very hot and sunny month but the heat has not slowed us down here at RegTech Associates. We have been working hard on some exciting client projects as part of our new Partnership Programmes, launched last month. Our team has also expanded temporarily, and I’d like to welcome Michael and Alexander to RegTech Associates, who will be working with us over the summer.

We were delighted to collaborate with Finnolux at their inaugural RegTech For London event which focused on ‘Do you really know and understand your customer?’. The session focused on AML and KYC and our very own Reg Doctor chaired a lively and engaging panel discussion.

As is customary before the summer holidays, the UK regulators have been very busy and have issued a flurry of consultation papers and policy statements. We take a look at the developments most relevant to our RegTech network.
